Nadathara Grama Panchayat was formed in 1961 after being separated from Puthur Panchayat. Spread across an area of 20.91 square kilometers, the panchayat is bordered by Pananchery Panchayat and Ollukkara Panchayat to the north, Pananchery and Puthur to the east, Puthur and Ollur to the south, and Thrissur Corporation along with Ollur and Ollukkara to the west. The panchayat has a literacy rate of 93% and a total population of 27,459, including 14,018 women and 13,441 men. Geographically, Nadathara belongs to the midland region and includes about 239 hectares of forest area. The terrain consists of hills, slopes, steep elevations, and plains with laterite and red soil types. Paddy is the major agricultural crop, while coconut, banana, arecanut, rubber, pepper, nutmeg, and vegetables are also cultivated. Irrigation facilities mainly depend on the Nadathara–Iravimangalam Canal, Pattalakkunnu Canal, and Kozhukully Canal, while the Manali River and several ponds serve as important water sources. The panchayat has 27 wells, 270 public water taps, and around 3,000 streetlights. National Highway 47 passes through the area, and major roads include the Nadathara–Valakkavu Road, Iravimangalam Road, and Kozhukully Road. The nearest railway station is Thrissur Railway Station, while residents mainly depend on Cochin International Airport for air travel. The panchayat has a vibrant industrial sector with small and medium industries such as thread rubber manufacturing, pipe manufacturing, metal crushers, hollow bricks, papad making, soda production, and rice mills, along with the traditional pottery industry. Important commercial centers include Poochatty, Moorkanikkara, Valakkavu, and Cherattumkuzhi. People belonging to Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities live harmoniously here, participating together in festivals and celebrations held at temples and churches such as Kootanal Temple, Thirumanamkunnu Temple, Kumarapuram Temple, Kozhukully Church, and Nadathara Church. Healthcare facilities include allopathy, ayurveda, and homoeopathy dispensaries, along with a veterinary hospital. The educational history of the panchayat began in 1920 with a Malayalam school established at Moorkanikkara, which was later upgraded into a government upper primary school. Today, the panchayat has several schools, a nursing college, and an ITC. Banking services are provided by branches of Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank, along with cooperative banks. Libraries, community halls, government offices, post offices, and agricultural institutions also contribute significantly to the social and cultural development of the panchayat.
